Travel Protection Guide

Protect the Journey.

“The right question isn’t only ‘Do I have insurance?’ It’s ‘What does this policy actually protect?’”

Travel insurance can help with certain covered cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical emergencies, evacuation needs and baggage problems. The important part is comparing the actual policy—not assuming every plan protects the same things.

How to Compare ↓
Before you buy

Read the policy, not just the price.

Compare covered reasons, benefit limits, exclusions, pre-existing-condition rules, purchase deadlines, primary vs. secondary medical coverage, emergency-assistance services and claim requirements.

Supplier plan or independent policy?
Compare both. A cruise line or resort plan can be convenient, but an independent policy may offer broader or differently structured benefits. The best fit depends on the traveler and the trip.

What policies may include

Coverage worth understanding before the unexpected happens.

Trip cancellation

May reimburse eligible prepaid, nonrefundable costs when you cancel for a covered reason.

Trip interruption

May help with unused trip costs and additional transportation when a covered event forces you home early.

Missed connection / cruise

Some policies include benefits when a covered delay causes you to miss a cruise departure or other connection. Look closely at required delay time and covered reasons.

Emergency medical

Can help with eligible medical expenses while traveling. Check whether coverage is primary or secondary and whether your domestic health plan works abroad.

Medical evacuation

Emergency transportation can be extremely expensive. Compare evacuation limits, destination rules and who determines medical necessity and transport location.

Travel delay & baggage

Policies may include reimbursement for eligible delays, meals, lodging, baggage delay, loss or damage—subject to limits and documentation.

How to compare

Supplier protection vs. an independent policy.

QuestionWhat to look for
Is cash reimbursement important? Some supplier plans may include future travel credits for certain benefits. Confirm whether benefits are cash, credit or a combination.
Do you travel several times a year?Compare a single-trip policy with an annual/multi-trip policy. Annual plans can be convenient, but trip-cancellation limits may work differently and can be annual aggregate limits.
Are you cruising?Check missed-connection requirements, itinerary-change provisions, trip interruption, medical coverage and evacuation limits—not simply “cruise protection.”
Are you traveling internationally?Pay close attention to emergency medical, evacuation/repatriation, assistance services and whether existing health coverage applies outside the U.S.
Do you have a pre-existing condition? Some plans offer a waiver of the pre-existing-condition exclusion when purchase and eligibility rules are met. Timing can matter.
Want maximum cancellation flexibility? Some policies offer Cancel For Any Reason as an optional benefit. It usually has purchase deadlines, eligibility rules and reimburses only a percentage of the insured trip cost.
Frequent traveler?

Annual / multi-trip coverage may be worth comparing.

“One policy for the year can be convenient—but check the limits.”

Annual plans are designed for travelers taking multiple trips during a policy year. Depending on the plan, they can include emergency medical/transportation, delay and baggage benefits, and some plans include trip cancellation/interruption. Always confirm the maximum trip length, annual cancellation limits, geographic rules and whether all travelers in the household are covered the way you expect.

A frequent traveler should compare the total annual cost and benefit limits against insuring each major trip separately—especially when one trip is significantly more expensive than the others.
Emergency planning

Coverage is only useful if you know how to use it.

Save assistance numbersKeep the insurer’s emergency-assistance number in your phone and with your travel documents.
Call when requiredSome benefits require contacting the assistance provider before arranging certain services, especially evacuation.
Keep documentationReceipts, delay notices, medical records, police reports and proof of loss may be needed for a claim.
Insure the right trip costUnderstand which prepaid, nonrefundable expenses should be included in the insured trip cost.
Know your medical networkUnderstand whether you pay up front, whether medical is primary or secondary and how claims are handled abroad.
Share the policyA trusted travel companion or family member should know where the policy and emergency information are stored.
